Because POTS occurs on spectrum, severity of symptoms can vary greatly. Individuals with POTS can also have varying intensity and frequency of symptoms. Using a mobility aid may make it possible to participate more fully and safely in desired activities. It is important to note that walking, when able, helps keep the muscles and muscle pumps of the legs in shape which helps propel some blood back into circulation. However, limited duration and the distance that an individual with POTS can walk as well as lightheadedness and potential syncope when upright may indicate the need for a mobility device. Occupational therapists are trained in evaluating the need for mobility aids and recommending the best fit. Increasing the ability to engage in more activities safely through the use of a mobility aid has the potential to increase quality of life for a person living with POTS.
